The written language was introduced very late in Palau so that parts of the Palauan culture and its traditions
are threatened to be lost because of the lack of written documents over the cenuries.
That also affects the traditional medicine and its herbs.
To sustain the knowledge and to pass it on to younger generations and visitors Akiko Sugiyama,
the current governor of Ngardmau, plans to create a botanical garden with the mentioned plants.
The garden is currently constructed in the shadow of the bauxite terraces on a 4.12 Hectare covering area.
Different kinds of traditional and also international herbs will soon form the landscape.
The herbs will also be used for educational purpose; to give children insight into traditional medicine.
The planned cultural center next to the botanical garden will provide information about the ancient Palauan culture and
their way of life.
