Ngardmau Governmental System
Palau has a very unique combination of traditional leadership and modern democracy based on the system of the USA.
As a third force next to the governor and the legislature the chiefs of Ngardmau are an important factor in this democratic system. They are the traditional leaders, heads of the clans and have the last voice regarding decisions that could affect the traditions and customs of the people. The chiefs are elected for a lifetime by the women of the clan.
The purpose of the governor is to manage the every day affairs of the state, e.g. finance, health, economy, etc. The govenor is elected directly by the people for a periode of 4 years.
The nine legislatures are responsible for making and changing the laws of the state of Ngardmau.
